After graduating from the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television (AGRFT) he first worked freelance as a theatre director, writer and critic, then he became and associate and assistant professor at AGRFT. He was a deputy in the first Slovenian National Assembly for four years from 1992. He was the mayor of the municipality of Trzin a member of the National Council of the Republic of Slovenia as the representative of the culture sector. In addition, he has always continued to work as a wirtier and critic. He has authored over ten books, including five novels, three short story books, two books on theatre criticism and a book of political essays. He was the President of the Slovene Writers’ Association, and the President of Slovenian Pen for five years. Before appointed minister, he was as state secretary at the Culture Ministry.
