
Tanja Salecl was born on 15 February 1964 in Slovenj Gradec. After grammar school in Ravne na Koroškem, she enrolled in the College for Social Work of the University of Ljubljana, where she graduated in 1985. She continued her studies at the Faculty of Arts, where she graduated in pedagogy in 1989. In 1996, she finished a course within a Slovenian-Swiss Government programme – the so-called ‘Master Project’ – aimed at the modernisation of public administration, and received the title of specialist in training and development. In 2003, she received an MA in management of non-profit organisations from the Faculty of Social Science with the thesis ‘The Position of Women in the Labour Market in the Transitional Period in Slovenia’.
She first worked for a major construction company in the HR department, and after 1993 at the Office for Equal Opportunities. In 2001, she began working as acting deputy director, while from 2004 to 2008, she held the post of director. On 25 February, the Government appointed her director of the Office for Equal Opportunities for a period of five years.
