Sebastjan Selan, MSc

 

Sebastjan Selan, MSc, was born on 1 September 1975 in Ljubljana. After finishing grammar school in Idrija, he enrolled for the political sciences at the Faculty of Social Sciences in Ljubljana. He graduated in 1998 with the thesis “Review of Legal and Organizational Regulation of Ministry of the Interior since 1980”. He obtained his master’s degree in political sciences in the field of American Studies in 2002 with the thesis “Analysis of US Military Strength and Operations Worldwide”.

He has been employed in the Slovene Intelligence and Security Agency since 1999. He has dealt with operational intelligence tasks since the beginning of his employment in the Agency. Until April 2005 he was in charge of planning, performing and heading secret operational tasks. After that, he headed, organized, planned and coordinated as head of operational department all operational tasks in the field of Slovenia’s integration into the EU and NATO. From 2006 to 2008, he was in charge of heading, organizing and coordinating the operational activities in the field of economy. After that, he headed one of the Agency’s intelligence centres. In performing his operational tasks, he cooperated with the foreign intelligence services and the most important Slovenian companies as well as public authorities. He obtained additional specialist skills and knowledge in intelligence activities among other by participating in various national and international expert seminars.

He was appointed Director of the Slovene Intelligence and Security Agency on 23 July 2010.

He is fluent in English, Croatian and Serbian and has basic knowledge of German and French.

 

 

 

Main Areas of Activity

The Slovene Intelligence and Security Agency is an independent Governmental service which, on the basis of law and in accordance with the priorities set by the Government on the basis of the national security programme adopted by the National Assembly, collects and evaluates information, and provides intelligence:

  • from abroad relevant for safeguarding the security, political and economic interests of the state;
  • on organisations, groups and persons who, through their activities abroad or in connection with foreign entities, constitute or could constitute a threat to the national security and constitutional order.

 

The Agency cooperates with competent state bodies and services in security clearance, and provides information relevant to the security of certain persons, posts, bodies, facilities and areas.
