Andrej Rupnik

 

 

Andrej Rupnik was born in Ljubljana on 11 July 1960. After graduating from the Police Cadet School in 1979, he was posted to Vrhnika police station. In 1986, he enrolled at the College for Police and Security Studies. After graduating, he became a lecturer on security systems at the Police High School in Tacen. In 1990, he was transferred to the Crime Suppression Directorate with the task of preparing and implementing the computerisation of the crime investigation service. He was head of development projects in the fields of crime informatics and crime analysis, and introduced cyber-crime investigation. As an expert, he cooperated on large-scale criminal investigations. 

 

In 1999, he was transferred to police headquarters, where he was responsible for reorganising the Slovenian Police. At the same time, he managed the Office of the Director General of Police, and performed many other system tasks. In 2000, he was appointed head of the International Relations Section of the General Police Directorate. In September 2007, the Slovene Government appointed him Director of the Slovene Intelligence and Security Agency.

 

Mr Rupnik also graduated from the Faculty of Law at the University of Ljubljana and studied at the FBI Academy. He has cooperated on PHARE international projects and was a member of the Council of Europe working group on cyber-crime. As a lecturer and instructor, he has cooperated on the projects of various international organisations in the Western Balkans. He has lectured on police informatics, analysis, intelligence processes, cyber-crime, and police organisation. 

 

Andrej Rupnik was actively involved in Slovenia’s struggle for independence; he is an active member of veterans’ organisations. He has received the bronze and silver orders by internal affairs bodies, the Slovenian Police Golden Shield and the Order of Freedom of the Republic of Slovenia. 

 

 

Main Areas of Activity

The Slovene Intelligence and Security Agency is an independent Governmental service which, on the basis of law and in accordance with the priorities set by the Government on the basis of the national security programme adopted by the National Assembly, collects and evaluates information, and provides intelligence:

  • from abroad relevant for safeguarding the security, political and economic interests of the state;
  • on organisations, groups and persons who, through their activities abroad or in connection with foreign entities, constitute or could constitute a threat to the national security and constitutional order.

 

The Agency cooperates with competent state bodies and services in security clearance, and provides information relevant to the security of certain persons, posts, bodies, facilities and areas.
