Irena Križman

Irena Križman, MSc

 

Irena Križman was born in Sevnica on 20 August 1951. In 1975 she graduated in sociology from the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Social Sciences. In 2002 she acquired a master’s degree in the management of non-profit organisations. She has been employed by the Statistical Office since 24 October 1974, becoming Deputy Director-General on 1 January 1987. On 1 June 2003 the Government appointed her Director-General of the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia. In line with the new Civil Servants Act, she was appointed Deputy Director-General on 28 June 2003, and on 20 November 2003 Director-General for a period of five years, with the option of reappointment. On 20 November 2008 the Government again appointed her Director-General for a period of five years.

 

Her work involves activities within working groups in the field of national statistics and active participation in international statistical organisations. In July 2003 she was elected one of the Vice-Chairs of the Bureau of the Conference of European Statisticians (CES) at the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe for the first time, and was re-elected for a further term in July 2005; in June 2009 she was elected for the third time, namely as member of the Bureau for the 2009 - 2011 period. She is also a member of the Statistical Programme Committee (SPC) at the European Commission, where she represents Slovenian national statistics. In May 2006 she was elected to a Partnership Group, which works as a steering group for the efficient functioning of the SPC. She is also a member of the United Nations international committee that produces the global Human Development Report, and is actively involved in the work of the International Statistical Institute (ISI) and the International Association of Official Statistics (IAOS); in August 2007 she was elected to the new IAOS Executive Committee for the 2007 - 2009 period.

Main Areas of Activity

The Statistical Office is an independent Government agency providing national statistics on the current situation and movements in the economic, demographic and social spheres, as well as providing data on environmental and natural resources to public administration bodies and organisations, the commercial sector and the general public.

 

The Office implements the medium-term and annual programmes of statistical surveys, performs development tasks of national statistics, analyses statistical data and information, and fulfils international obligations of the Republic of Slovenia by providing and exchanging statistical data with other countries and international organisations.
