As a body within the Ministry, the police force is one of the pillars of national security, ensuring a high degree of internal security for all inhabitants of Slovenia, by protecting the constitutional order and democratic political system as well as other constitutional values. The functioning of the Police is founded on the exercising and respect of the legal order, European conventions and recommendations, plus an ethical and professional approach alongside consistent respect of human rights and fundamental freedoms.
Police duties include protecting the life, personal safety and property of individuals, prevention and investigation of criminal offences and violations, detection and arrest of perpetrators of criminal offences and violations, and of other wanted persons and their remand to the competent authorities; maintenance of public order; supervision and regulation of traffic on public and unregistered roads available for public use; protection of national borders and control of border crossings; carrying out duties laid down in the regulations on aliens; protection of certain individuals, bodies, structures and locations, and protecting the secrecy of data of state bodies.
Police organisation
In accordance with the law, the Police is organised to perform duties on the national, regional and local levels. Duties are performed by the general police administration, police administration units and police stations. Police tasks at the regional level fall within the jurisdiction of individual police administration units, and those at local level within the jurisdiction of the police stations.

The Internal Affairs Inspectorate performs the tasks of inspection supervision of the implementation of regulations in the fields of private protection, detection activities, weapons, ammunition, explosives and administrative affairs relating to transportation.
Established by Government decree on 1 January 2004, it began formal operations on 15 February 2004. The Inspectorate is a body within the Ministry of the Interior, and performs tasks in the following areas:

The Public Administration Inspectorate performs inspections of the implementation of regulations and general acts governing the employment relationships of civil servants, the implementation of the General Administrative Procedure Act and other acts governing administrative procedures, and the implementation of the Decree on Administrative Operations and the Access to Public Information Act.
The Ministry of the Interior is responsible for public security and policing, the organisation and status of the State Prosecutor's Office, judicial supervision over the operation of the State Prosecutor's Office, judicial administration in the field of the State Prosecutor's Office, international cooperation and international legal assistance in the part which refers to State Prosecutor's Offices; and tasks concerning administrative domestic affairs and migration and the implementation of constitutional and legislative regulations related to the special rights of the members of the Italian and Hungarian national communities, and monitoring and providing for the protection of the special rights of the Roma community living in the Republic of Slovenia.
