At today’s working conference at Brdo pri Kranju, convened by the prime minister, the ministers exchanged views on the priority tasks of the Slovenian presidency of the Council of the European Union in the second half of 2021.

The presidency of the EU Council is a significant challenge due to the complexity of the content and the organisational, staffing, financial and communications aspects.

Therefore the Slovenian government is already beginning extensive preparations, with the activities involving all of the ministries and government offices.

The organisational structure for the preparations for and implementation of the presidency under the leadership of Prime Minister Marjan Šarec and the project leader, State Secretary in the Slovenian Prime Minister’s Office Igor Mally, was presented in November 2018.

The government is expected to approve the terms of reference at the end of February, which will serve as the basis for the planning and implementation of all of the necessary activities.

At the same time, it represents a starting point for discussions with European institutions and with Germany and Portugal as the partners in the trio of presiding EU Member States.

This government remains committed to making Slovenia’s presidency of the EU Council not just a project of state institutions, but one of people.

The Slovenian presidency of the EU Council must become a national priority with the objective of long-lasting positive effects on the lives of people and communities.
