Ljubljana – As expected, at yesterday’s session, the National Assembly set the date for a referendum on the Slovenia-Croatia arbitration agreement. The referendum, which will be held on 6 June, was supported by 78 deputies.
In the debate before the ballot, the Prime Minister, Borut Pahor, stressed that rejecting the arbitration agreement at the referendum would be a great mistake which would seriously affect future relations with Croatia. In the PM’s view, the arbitration agreement would strengthen Slovenia’s international reputation. “We are seeking a border that is just and ensures peace between the nations,” said Mr Pahor, highlighting the positive message that would be sent to East European countries, the EU and the international community if the border issue is resolved.
The referendum is open to all citizens registered to vote in the Republic of Slovenia, and the decision, based on a simple 50% majority of votes cast, will be binding.
