Response to story in Der Spiegel regarding arbitration

In a response to a story in the German weekly Der Spiegel on the European Commission’s Legal Service’s position regarding arbitration, Prime Minister Marjan Šarec stated that it is necessary to respect the rule of law, as the Legal Service in Brussels also stated, but the Commission has clearly decided otherwise.

He added that the arbitral award must be enforced.

In its position paper, the Legal Service wrote that the majority of the claims made by Slovenia motion for the lawsuit with regard to violations of EU law by Croatia are well-founded, and that the European Commission should support this view in its opinion.

Foreign Minister Miro Cerar stated that these statements confirm his assessment that the Commission did not play its role as the upholder of EU treaties. All of this also shows that there is no other path forward except for both countries working towards the implementation of the arbitral award.
