Slovenia regrets the withdrawal of the USA from the Paris Climate Agreement

The decision of President Trump to withdraw the United States of America from the Paris Climate Agreement is deeply regretted. The Agreement represents a historic accord that would guide the world towards sustainable development needed to heal our planet. The commitments under the Agreement represent an incentive for driving investment and development decisions on modern foundations. Climate change is a global phenomenon and unfortunately spares no country or region, nor can any country tackle it simply for itself or for its neighbours. The Climate Agreement in Paris was therefore important precisely because it brought together the entire world in a common effort to fight climate change.

Broad global solutions are possible only in a common approach and with global efforts, so withdrawal of a signatory from the Paris accord cannot benefit the fight against climate change. Nevertheless we should point out that withdrawal will affect principally that signatory, since it will mean a loss of political credibility in the field of climate change and will lead to isolation and a return to the outmoded times of fossil-fuel energy that are unacceptable for the environment and planet.

As part of the European Union and the coalition of ambitious and climate-proactive countries of the world, Slovenia will strive to continue with even greater determination along the path mapped out under the Paris Agreement. To date the Paris climate deal has been ratified by 147 countries out of a total 197 countries that have signed the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. Without doubt the ratification process in the remaining countries will be accelerated. The proactive approach of all other countries will most certainly spur the more rapid drafting of all the rules and technical instructions to begin implementing the Paris Agreement in 2021. Indeed it remains the duty of all signatories to stick to the path mapped out.

The withdrawal of the USA from the Paris Agreement is therefore not an obstacle for the world on its determined path towards a new paradigm of sustainable development and a low-carbon society based on renewable energy sources. This path alone will bring an environmentally balanced planet, prosperity and green jobs for all and for future generations. There is no going back on this path, and it is at the same time our moral duty to follow it. And all countries of the world will continue to invite the USA to join us on this path.
