    Ljubljana, 21 December 2012 - The decision of the Constitutional Court to reject a motion for a referendum on the Act on the Measures of the Republic of Slovenia to Strengthen Bank Stability and the Act on the Slovenian Sovereign Holding sends a positive signal to the international community and financial markets. We have already seen a positive response, particularly from the financial markets, which closely follow the economic and political situation in Slovenia.

    The Government of the Republic of Slovenia approved the Decree on Temporary Financing of the Republic of Slovenia in the January-March 2013 period. The period of temporary financing can extend to a maximum of three months; therefore, the Decree applies to the January-March period. Temporary financing means that it is more difficult for government bodies to engage new tasks and cannot conclude contracts extending over the temporary financing period.

    “The conclusions adopted represent a great step forward” said PM Janez Janša after the conclusion of the European Council, adding that “the overall political environment in European institutions and in the European Union in general is, at the end of 2012, much better than had been at the beginning of the year”. The EU and European institutions will be able “to better resist to blows and shocks of the economic and financial crisis because of conclusions and measures adopted.  These mechanisms are fundamental for preventing negative effects we have been witnessing in the past years”.

    Having arrived at the European Council meeting, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Janez Janša, pointed out that the agreement on a legislative framework for a single banking supervision mechanism in the euro area is “good news'” given the situation in which the Slovenian banks have found themselves. He also stressed that it would take a while before this mechanism becomes operational. By then, Slovenia must “do its own home-work”.

    ''Borut Pahor has obtained an excellent and a convincing result; I am particularly thankful to him that in the second round of the presidential campaign he also raised issues which are unpopular but necessary and which in spite of this brought him the support of the voters,'' said the Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Janez Janša, after proclamation of the unofficial results of the presidential election.

    At the invitation of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Janez Janša, the Prime Minister of Serbia, Ivica Dačić, who also serves as the Minister of the Interior, has begun an official two-day visit to Slovenia. Dačić's first visit to Slovenia offers an opportunity to strengthen the diverse cooperation between the two countries in different areas. The talks focused mainly on economic cooperation. Mr Janša said that the PMs agreed that “trade in goods and services is the pillar of cooperation between the two countries”, which is good despite the current crisis.

    The Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia, Janez Janša, began a working visit to the Russian Federation together with representatives of over forty companies. The visit began with a short meeting with Alexey Miller, the Chairman of the Gazprom Management Committee, to discuss the progress of the South Stream project. In continuation of his visit, the PM met the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin to discuss bilateral relationships and remaining opportunities for economic cooperation in the energy, banking, IT, tourism and culture sectors.

    PM Janez Janša, President Danilo Türk, referendum initiators and presidential candidates Borut Pahor and Milan Zver agreed at the meeting on Thursday to do everything in their power to avert referenda on the laws setting up a bad bank and a sovereign holding. The next round of talks will be held on Monday. PM Janša said the meeting had demonstrated some good will to lift the blockades threatening two key crisis measures. He also noted that proposals by the union and the opposition on both laws were acceptable like the one that representatives of social partners and the opposition be involved in the oversight of both institutions.
