Sustainability is the Future

This week has been marked by water and forests, two natural riches that are inseparably connected in a complex interrelationship. The two-way connections between forests and water are many more than they seem. One is the fact that forest areas provide as much as 75% of the world's fresh water reserves, with forests acting as an effective natural water filter.

The common thread is sustainability. Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present human generation without endangering the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Human beings need water. Water sources and the numerous services related to them are an opportunity to reduce poverty, boost economic growth and improve environmental sustainability. Forests are a natural water reservoir and also a factor with a significant impact on water drainage.

Water and forests – the former described by Prime Minister Miro Cerar on World Water Day as "the liquid gold of the 21st century" and the latter hailed as Slovenia's national pride – are two resources that we must permanently safeguard and invest in, since they represent key themes of the future.
