500 years of Slovenian identity

The last day of October is the day we celebrate Reformation Day, which reminds us of our national identity and our unique language and culture, which were first recorded for posterity by Primož Trubar. Five hundred years have passed since the printing of the first book written in Slovene. Reformation Day is not just a religious holiday for the Protestant community, but also a holiday of national awakening, freedom of the spirit, culture and creativity in all walks of life for all Slovenes. It is a holiday of national identity based on our language and culture.

By printing the first book in the Slovene language, Trubar, who introduced Protestant thought to our region, not only laid the foundations for Slovenian literature and standard literary Slovene, but also inspired and reinforced Slovenian national consciousness. Therefore, in honour of the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Protestant Reformation, the Government has proclaimed 2017 as the Year of the Reformation.

The round-numbered anniversary of the Reformation is thus an opportunity for us to think once more about what we want and how we are going to get there, and at the same time shapes our thoughts and helps us find the answers to the challenges of today.
