The Year of Cankar

We have just bid farewell to the Year of Plečnik in 2017 and entered 2018, the Year of Cankar, in which we will mark the 100th anniversary of the writer’s death. For in 2018, on the 100th anniversary of his death we will pay special homage to the great Slovenian writer Ivan Cankar with a Year of Cankar here in Slovenia.

We know Ivan Cankar as the greatest Slovenian writer and dramatist, but he was also a poet, critic, essayist and politician. He was the first Slovenian professional writer, something which in his day was not exactly a respected occupation. Above all he was and still is regarded as a man with an exceptional clarity of spirit and an immeasurable sensitivity to ethical matters, and still today he remains an alive, fascinating, engaged and intriguing author with an internal ethic.

Cankar’s name will be the link between a range of cultural events throughout the year. An especially diverse range of events is set to take place in Cankar’s birthplace of Vrhnika, and at the same time the life and heritage of the great literary figure will be celebrated by numerous public and private institutions, exhibition venues, societies and individuals throughout Slovenia.
