It’s a bee thing

The existence of a celebration of the importance of bees has its roots right here in Slovenia. A week ago we celebrated the second annual World Bee Day, which was proposed by Slovenia. The proclamation is one of Slovenia’s greatest diplomatic successes. The main purpose of World Bee Day is to raise awareness around the world about the importance of bees and other pollinators for humankind, particularly with respect to the fight to end world hunger.

The main event on this day, organised by Slovenia and the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) was held at FAO headquarters in Rome, at which the central theme of the event was the role of bees and pollinators in agriculture and food production. The gift of a beehive to the Pope is also highly newsworthy. The Vatican Gardens will from now on be richer by one Slovenian beehive, which will carry the message of World Bee Day and Slovenia’s efforts to protect bees.

World Bee Day tells the story of Slovenia’s exceptional natural assets, its wealth of biodiversity and its commitment to sustainable development. At the same time, World Bee Day brings a great deal of responsibility; if the result of the Slovenian initiative is increased concern for pollinators, it is now Slovenia’s task to develop and promote this movement around the world.
