Volunteers – all generations, all colours, all knowledge

“I greatly appreciate the positive energy of volunteers that make concrete efforts by offering their hands to help the vulnerable and those in need,” said Prime Minister Miro Cerar in the context of the 17th National Volunteer Week celebrated from 16th to 22nd May in Slovenia.

Running under the slogan: “All generations, all colours, all knowledge with love,” the main emphasis of the National Volunteer Week is placed on voluntary organisations and their activities as well as the achievements of volunteers within the framework of different events that will be held in ten places across Slovenia.

Although voluntary work is highly developed in Slovenia, it usually does not get enough attention. But in recent months, the state felt the immense power of voluntarism, with volunteers from numerous humanitarian and non-governmental organisations contributing to a more humane reception of refugees and migrants.

Even now, when Slovenia is already taking migrants under the European quota system (a new group of six Eritreans from Italy arrived yesterday), volunteers from non-governmental and humanitarian organisations and random individuals are responsible for numerous activities, including help offered to children and adults while waiting for status approvals. While state defines a framework of integration, it is still important to recognise that integration cannot succeed without close cooperation with volunteers and the civil society in general.
