Combating trafficking in human beings

Trafficking in human beings

Trafficking in human beings includes all forms of recruitment, sale or transfer of vulnerable individuals or groups (within or outside the country) for the purpose of exploitation (exploitation in the form of prostitution or other kinds of sexual exploitation, forced labour, slavery, servitude and forced participation in criminal acts).

National Coordinator for combating trafficking in human beings

In February 2002, the Government of the Republic of Slovenia appointed a national coordinator for combating trafficking in human beings. The tasks of the national coordinator in Slovenia are carried out by Sandi Čurin who also heads the National Working Group on combating trafficking in human beings (NWG).

National Working Group on combating trafficking in human beings

National Working Group on combating trafficking in human beings (NWG) is composed of representatives of line ministries, NGOs, the Office of the State Prosecutor General and the National Assembly. The NWG directs and coordinates the activities of individual institutions, enables inter-ministerial cooperation and coordination and ensures the use of a multidisciplinary approach to prevention of trafficking in human beings.

Detection, investigation and prosecution of criminal offences

The criminal offence of trafficking in human beings is among criminal offences that are the most responsive to socio-economic conditions at the local as well as the global level. Therefore, its forms are constantly changing and adapting, which requires that law enforcement authorities carefully monitor the situation and maintain fruitful inter-ministerial cooperation in order to recognise and prosecute it.

Prevention of trafficking in human beings

In combating trafficking in human beings, prevention is of crucial importance. Numerous activities are aimed at raising awareness within vulnerable groups as well as among the general public and various experts whose work relates to trafficking in human beings. Preventive activities are also targeted at consumers and users of services performed by the victims of trafficking in human beings.

Assistance to and protection of the victims of trafficking in human beings

In Slovenia, assistance to the victims of trafficking in human beings is provided by the Ključ Society, Slovene Philanthropy and Caritas Slovenia. The care of victims of trafficking in human beings is provided by programmes for crisis accommodation and safe accommodation as well as (re)integration programmes for victims of trafficking in human beings.
