Mateja Vraničar Erman graduated in 1989 fromt he Faculty of law at the University of Ljubljana, leand obtained her MPA from Harvard University, Law School and JF Kennedy School of Government in 1997.

From 1989 to 1993, she worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while since 1993 she has been employed by the Ministry of Finance, where she has been responsible for several important activities, mainly in the organisation units of the Ministry responsible for the customs and tax systems. She was responsible for the co-ordination and preparation of the first Slovenian Customs Act and relevant implementing regulations, which were based on the European customs system. She was head of the Department for Indirect Taxation and later head of the Department for Tax and Customs Policy and Legislation in the Directorate for the System of Tax, Customs and Other Public Finance Revenues. From April 2010 to February 2012 she was State Secretary at the Ministry of Finance, primarily responsible for the area of taxation and customs systems, budget and public accounting. After the end of her term she refocused on research work on tax system regulations. Until the appointment as the Minister of Finance on 21 September, she was the State Secretary at Ministry of Finance.
